The UK now has more than half a million unbundled phone and Internet connections, according to BT Openreach. After a faltering start local loop unbundling is now proceeding at a rate of 20,00 lines a week, with customers attracted by cheaper and faster broadband connections and low price telephone calls, afforded to some extent by BT's recent wholesale price cuts. Yahoo lifts storage limits on Yahoo! Mail to 250MB

Yahoo! is to more than double the amount of free storage space for its email customers. In future, Yahoo! Mail account holders will have up to 250MB in which to store emails, up from the previous limit of 100MB. The move is in response to Microsoft's announcement that it is to raise the storage limit on Hotmail accounts to 250MB although this still leaves Yahoo users short of the 1GB offered by rival Google's Gmail service. ...more

New Google tools aim to sharpen up News coverage

Google has introduced a Sitemap protocol and new webmaster tools for Google News in order to improve both the 'freshness' of its coverage and to enable webmaster to determine precisely what content they want to appear on the news aggregation service. News Sitemaps tell Google exactly which articles to crawl for inclusion in Google News. The News Sitemaps XML definition lets webmasters specify a publication date and time for each article and to set keywords for each article that determine placement of the articles into the relevant sections on Google News. ...more
