Government launches online child safety campaign

The Government has announced it will begin a new advertising campaign warning of the dangers to children when online and on mobile phones. Previous campaigns have proved effective, with a decrease from 40 per cent to 27 per cent of children who use chat rooms and instant messaging willing to give out their email address. Nearly two thirds of parent now monitor or advise their children on their online activities and three-qharters of children can recall having been given safety advice. ...more

Microsoft touts boggling figures for XP SP2 installs

Following unprecedented publicity and effort Microsoft is saying that it has distributed 106 million copies of Windows XP Service Pack 2 in the past two months. Of these 90 million were downloaded via Automatic Update whilst another 16 million copies have been distributed via CD. Windows XP SP2 has been built specifically to deal with the host of security problems that have arisen with the operating system over the past few years. ...more

SCO pulls IBM's Unix licence

SCO has filed an injunction against IBM, revoking its right to use or sell its AIX Unix-based operating system. The injunction also contains an amendment that seeks damages with regard to revenues IBM earned from sales of AIX post the 100-day deadline that expired last Friday. 'IBM has chosen to continue the actions that violate our source code and distribution agreements,' said Darl McBride, President and CEO of The SCO Group. ...more

UK notebook shipments nearly double

Consumer spending has driven up notebook shipments 94.8 per cent year on year, according to analysts IDC. Overall, notebook shipments for all sectors were up 41. ...more
