iPods get airborne as Zune launches below

Apple has announced that from next year six leading airlines will begin introducing integration between iPods and in-flight entertainment systems. Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections which power and charge their portable players during flight and allow the video content on their iPods to be viewed on the their seat back displays. 'There is no better travelling companion than an iPod, and now travellers can power their iPods during flight and even watch their iPod movies and TV shows on their seat back displays,' said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing. ...more

Sun bids for Java-bundled Windows

Sun asks judge to order XP to ship with Java to repair Microsoft damage Yesterday saw the start of a week-long hearing, as Microsoft wheeled its antitrust lawyers back into the courts to defend itself from Sun. Sun has asked for a preliminary injunction to replace Microsoft's Java interpreter with its own version in Windows XP and Internet Explorer. US District Judge Frederick Motz said such a solution would be 'elegant and simple, although dramatic' but expressed concerns that giving Java a free ride piggybacking XP would give Sun possibly unfair benefits. ...more

Ofcom extends mis-selling rules to LLU services

Ofcom has announced that its rules protecting consumers from the mis-selling of fixed-line voice call services will now also cover providers that offer voice and broadband services using full local loop unbundling (LLU) technology. These rules cover sales and marketing activities deemed inappropriate by the industry regulator, including 'slamming', where customers can be switched from one company to another without their express knowledge and consent. Since May 2005 a new General Condition of Entitlement has required providers of fixed-line voice call services to establish then comply with a code of practice for sales and marketing in accordance with Ofcom's guidelines. ...more
