ASUS has launched its Wi-Fi@HOME platform, designed to make wireless networking easier for those without the time or expertise. The platform consists of ASUS motherboards with WiFi slot, a WLAN card, and a software utility that can turn your PC into an access point, allowing other wirelessly-enabled devices use it to share data and services such as Internet access. ASUS's take on the trouble with WiFi is that to prevent the compatibility issues that can occur through the use of WiFi products from different manufacturers, its WiFi motherboards will have a slot that only supports its WiFi cards: thus precluding the issue of other manufacturers' cards not working properly - because they won't work at all. ...more

France ponders Office Document Format requirements

France might be about to follow Massachusetts in insisting that all French administration computer files are saved in the open standard Office Document Format (ODF). The country's General Repository for Interoperability (RGI) is proposing ODF as the recommended format for semi-structured office documents, such as word processing files presentations and spreadsheets, but wants to make it mandatory for exchanging those documents. HP has launched an armada of new kit in the UK including 8x write speed DVD burners and more Media Center PCs. The DVD drives start at ?129 for the internal IDE drive, ?179 for the external and ?219 for the new Movie Writer dc4000 which includes all the ports, wires and software you need to back up your VHS tapes too. The m400 series of Media Center desktops cost either ?1,199 or ?1,299 depending on specification although both are based on Hyper Threading P4s and offer large disks for storing media files. ...more
