Sober deadline passes quietly

The security industry breathed a collective sigh of relief over the weekend as the date which was to trigger computers infected with the Sober virus to download more malicious code apparently passed without incident. Finnish security company F-Secure said that the online resources the machines were poised to tap had not been primed with any malicious code so that when the infected PCs logged on, there was nothing there to download. Furthermore, the company says that the worm was also programmed to stop spreading on 6 January and, as a result, the virus that had been by far the most prolific over the past two months has simply dropped off the radar. ...more

Mozilla adds spam filtering

Spam filtering has been introduced in the latest version of the email component of the Mozilla Web software. With some initial 'training' - letting the software know which messages you classify as junk - the client can identify and segregate spam messages from good messages. Apple offers fix for PowerBook white spots

Apple has announced a programme to repair certain 15in PowerBooks whose screens have been found to show faint white spots. The 15in PowerBook G4 Display Repair Extension Program will provide free repairs for machines displaying the problem that fall within two serial number ranges: V7334xxxxxx to V7345xxxxxx and QT331xxxxxx to QT339xxxxxx.
