AOL hits the small screen

BSkyB will let AOL members access their email and instant messenger buddies in a deal announced today The interactive TV service will be available on Sky Active and allow AOL users to log in with their screen name to access news, sport and weather as well as email and instant messaging services. The channel maintains the television content in a quarter-screen window, so you can message your buddies with the latest happenings in Hollyoaks. Dial-up charges are on a local call tariff, although there is a 12p 'initiating' charge on connecting to the AOL service. ...more

BT cuts off broadband users in ISP dispute

BT has cut off around 5,500 broadband users because their ISP failed to pay its bill. Customers of Euro1Net, which is operated by Advanced Data Services, who attempted to access the Internet this week were redirected to a holding page explaining that, 'BT Wholesale has stopped providing a service to Advanced Data Services, due to the non-payment of invoices.' BT added that it is working to ensure that Euro1Net customers are able to order a new broadband service as soon as possible, a process should be completed by 5 September, leaving them offline for a fortnight. ...more

Yahoo! expands search to SMS

Internet portal Yahoo! has enhanced its mobile phone offerings with the launch of Yahoo! SMS (Short Message Service) Search and the enhancement of Yahoo! Search on Mobile. Yahoo! SMS Search, as the name suggests, allows a mobile phone user to text a search request to Yahoo! and get back results. Yahoo! says that the service will offer a range of information services including weather reports, share prices and local information. ...more

Boeing gets green light for in-flight Net access

Boeing claims world's first approval for airborne, satellite-based broadband service. The US Federal Aviation Administration has officially granted certification to the in-flight 'Connexion by Boeing' system. Using a Boeing 737-400, testing and data analysis has been completed for providing passengers with high-speed Internet and intranet access, as well as general entertainment systems. ...more
